Two new water towers are now under construction in Slidell, marking a major milestone in what parish leaders call the largest water investment project in St. Tammany history.
The $23 million upgrade is designed to bring safer, more reliable drinking water to more than 8,000 homes across the Crossgates and Ozone Pines subdivisions.
“These water towers are symbols of the progress that we’re making—something people can see from a long ways away,” said Jeff Corbin, a St. Tammany Councilman. “The people I’ve talked to are excited. They were in the ‘I’ll believe it when I see it’ mode, but now they’re seeing it.”
Beyond the visual impact, the project is all about infrastructure resilience. In case of an emergency like a ruptured water main, the new towers will provide crucial backup supply.
“We provide safe drinking water,” said Michael Vinsanau, public information officer for St. Tammany Parish. “But in the event of something happening, if there’s a water main that’s hit, we have backup water that we know is safe.”
The investment is also part of long-term planning for growth in East St. Tammany.
“You’ll see signs showing up,” said Parish Council member David Cougle. “The amount of investment, the amount of money going into it, and exactly what it’s going to be doing. I think it’s a promise kept from the parish.”
Both towers are expected to be fully operational by early next year.
