A local business owner who once found himself on the receiving end of disaster relief is now paying it forward.
Greg Johnson, whose auto detail shop was damaged by a tornado in Slidell last year, is spearheading a donation drive this week to help communities affected by devastating floods in Texas.
Johnson is collecting essential supplies at his shop, located at 100 Industrial Road, for families who lost everything in the recent floods. The drive officially kicks off Tuesday and will run through Friday.
“We’ve been through it ourselves,” Johnson said. “I told the Lord, ‘If we’re meant to go, send us — give us the supplies, give us the people, give us a community and send us.’”
The donation site is accepting a range of items, including non-perishable food, bottled water, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, baby necessities, pet food, and clothing. Monetary contributions can be sent via Venmo to @gregjohnson87. Johnson said a screenshot of the account balance will be shared publicly at the end of the drive to ensure full transparency.
Slidell resident Donna Maeder, one of the first to drop off donations, said she was moved to act. “It rested on my heart,” Maeder said. “My heart breaks for them, and I felt like we had to do something.”
