Forty three years ago, one of the worst plane crashes in history happened in Kenner, Louisiana.
Pan Am Flight 759 crashed after taking off from Louis Armstrong International Airport, resulting in more than 150 fatalities.
The tragic scene unfolded on July 9, 1982, when the plane encountered microburst-induced wind shear, causing it to crash to the ground within a minute of takeoff.
More than 150 people were killed, and many others were hurt.
It was later determined that the crash was caused by a microburst-induced wind shear.
This disaster led to changes in forecasting, with Doppler radar now used at airports to detect wind shear and microbursts like the one that brought down the plane.
