While it was the fifth practice of training camp for the New Orleans Saints, it felt like the first real day of football Monday.
That’s because the pads came on, so the physicality and intensity ramped up.
With the pads on, it’s easier to see how all the battles we’re monitoring develop. The quarterback competition remains the focus, but another position group to pay attention to: running back.
Behind Alvin Kamara, it’s a wide-open race between a handful of rushers, including Kendre Miller, who is fighting for more snaps.
The running back out of TCU has been battling the injury bug since arriving in New Orleans and wasn’t necessarily in the good graces of the old regime.
But with Kellen Moore at the helm, Miller has a clean slate and is taking advantage of it, even going as far to change his number.
“I was injured in ’25, and I just want to start something new. I feel good finally, kind of just want to leave that old mojo in the past and just kind of move on,” Kendre Miller said.
That old mojo is changing with Miller saying he’s the healthiest he’s been in the NFL.
The running back added he’s ready to thrive in Kellen Moore’s offense which has some familiarity.
“I feel like this is what I ran at TCU. I feel very comfortable in the offense,” Miller added.
The running back room is crowded.
Joining Miller behind Kamara, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Cam Akers and rookie Devin Neal.
“We’ve got a nice blend,” head coach Kellen Moore said.
“Some guys who have been in this league for a number of years, who’ve contributed at high levels that we’re excited to see and some younger guys. For those guys, it’s just going to be a matter of taking advantage of those opportunities.”
