It’s all hands on deck across the metro area to track down two men: escaped inmate Derrick Groves and Khalil Bryan.
WDSU has learned that Bryan, who was mistakenly released from custody last week, could be treated like an escaped inmate.
It’s been one week since Bryan was mistakenly released from jail, and now a manhunt is on to get him back in custody.
Rafael Goyeneche with the Metropolitan Crime Commission said, “The fact that he is still being looked for is an indication that he is making himself scarce.”
According to Goyeneche, although the error falls on the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, if Bryan signed any documents and took someone’s property, he could face more charges.
“Identity theft, escape and falsifying public records,” Goyeneche said.
Brian Fair with the U.S. Marshal’s office told WDSU that Bryan is now considered a fugitive and the search for his whereabouts is identical to the search for escaped inmate Derrick Groves.
“He’s got a pretty significant criminal history, and he’s on the run, so it’s a very similar investigation,” Fair said.
Federal law enforcement agents also confirmed that they’ve spoken with Bryan’s family and other individuals he may have been in contact with.
“He’s aware that he was accidentally released. He refuses to come in and deal with his legal issues, so he’s on the run at this point,” Fair said.
As the search now nears a second week, law enforcement is urging Bryan to come forward saying the more he hides, the worse his situation becomes.
“He knows that he should not have been released,” Goyeneche said.
Crimestoppers confirmed that because Bryan is now considered a fugitive, there’s a $2,500 reward for any information leading to his arrest.
