Colorado State University (CSU) has released it’s July Atlantic hurricane season update.
The new update now calls for 9 named storms, 4 hurricanes, and 1 major hurricane.
This is down from the April forecast of 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes. In June, CSU called for 11 named storms, 5 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes.
An average Atlantic hurricane season has 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.
The reason for the reduced forecast is due to the continuation of El Nino in the Pacific which is forecast to strengthen further by the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.
El Nino typically reduces Atlantic tropical cyclone activity due to increased wind shear and atmospheric stability.
