The general election for the Public Service Commission, District 1, seat is on the ballot November 3rd.
Two of the three candidates on the ballot attended the WDSU Hot Seat Debate.
Early voting is happening right now.
The seat covers 10 parishes surrounding New Orleans and crosses the lake to the Northshore.
The PSC regulates public utilities like power, water and gas statewide.
The seat is open because current District 1 Commissioner, Eric Skrmetta, a Republican from Metairie, is barred by term limits from seeking re-election.
Newly created party primaries impacted this race.
The party primaries and runoffs were held in May and June.
Five Republicans qualified to run with current Lakeview-based State Representative Stephanie Hilferty winning the GOP runoff.
She now faces No Party candidate Chris Justin, an engineer and Democrat Connie Norris, who lives in Slidell.
Hilferty did not attend the debate due to a scheduling conflict, according to a campaign spokesperson.
She did previously attend a GOP debate in May.
