Saints fans in Paris celebrated a historic NFL matchup in France, describing the experience as unforgettable despite the team’s defeat.
“The stadium was just amazing. The pyrotechnics, the fireworks,” said Pam Lyles, attendee, “it was obviously one of the most memorable .”
Lyles said a jumbo screen at the Stade de France stadium listed 78,488 NFL fans were in attendance.
“Being that it was open air, our biggest concern was that it was cool. And it had been raining for the last few days,” said Jack Lyles, attendee. “We got a little sprinkle on the way in, and once we got there, it couldn’t have been better football weather.”
The Lyles cheered on the Saints from a 16-person suite shared with Steelers fans.
Mayor Helena Moreno also made the nearly 5,000-mile journey to Paris. Before the game, she met with Paris leaders to discuss opportunities.
“We found different ways in which our cities can collaborate, particularly around infrastructure,” Moreno said. “But then also have been having very successful economic development meetings as well.”
While some fan events were canceled due to civil unrest in Paris, the game continued as scheduled.
Lyles said the protests did not directly impact their experience.
“There was no, no hostilities,” said Jack Lyles, “it was it was in your conversation, but not in your face.”
The Saints are set to return home to face the Cleveland Browns at the Superdome in two weeks on Sunday, Nov. 8.
