In New Orleans, costumes are part of life year-round, from Mardi Gras and neighborhood parades to theater productions and festivals. But finding the right fabric and supplies can mean traveling outside the city or ordering online. A new shop on St. Claude Avenue in the Marigny hopes to give local artists and makers another option.
Faubourg Fabrics and Trimmings is now open to serve a community where dressing up is part of the culture. The store’s owner, Dan’l Linehan, knows the scene well. He’s a New Orleans drag artist who performs as Apostrophe. Now he’s trading the spotlight for a storefront and bringing his creative flair to the fabric business. Who better to help the city’s artists find the right material?
Linehan said the shop aims to be a neighborhood resource for costume makers and creative professionals. He said local artists have fewer fabric options in the city and often must travel outside Orleans Parish or shop online. That can add stress when a parade, festival or performance is coming up, especially for people without a vehicle.
There’s also something special about shopping in person. Makers can see and feel fabrics and trims before they buy, helping them find the right fit for their next creation.
Shoppers can find essentials such as sequins, stretch fabrics, velvets, decorative trims and fringe. The store also carries appliques, rhinestones and feathers.
For New Orleans artists and makers, the shop offers a local place to find materials and supplies. Linehan hopes to help fellow creatives bring their ideas, performances and traditions to life without leaving the city. After all, the show must go on, and now there’s a new place to get the fabric for it.
