“Everybody’s embraced it. Everybody loves him. They come up and ask if they could pet him and they want to take pictures with him. So, it’s been kind of fun,” said Rick Curiel.
LSU’s breakout star of the College World Series spends his time in the stands where he sits, stays, and isn’t afraid to bark at the other team.
His name is Bo. And he’s freshman outfielder Derek Curiel’s four-legged best friend.
“Derek picked him from a litter, when he was about 8 weeks old. This is Derek’s dog,” said Rick.
After a rough six months away from his owner, Derek’s mom, Linda fetched Bo a plane ticket from California to Omaha for the College World Series.
“I had no idea that he was coming out. He’s my best friend. He’s 4 years old. Haven’t seen him in six months because I’ve been at LSU. My mom surprised me with him because she knew I missed him and he’s a part of my family, so obviously we’re happy to have Bo here,” said Derek.
Derek was a top 10 prospect out of high school and withdrew from the MLB draft to play at LSU.
Just like his owner, Bo is calm under pressure and always makes time for the fans.
“He’s just so loving. And everybody has just embraced him,” said Linda Curiel.
“We didn’t expect it at all. We had no idea this is going to happen, but it’s been, it’s been fun,” said Rick.
And on the biggest stage of Derek’s career…
“We’ve worked our worked our butts off for the last 11 months to be here and, now we, get to play have the opportunity to play in the national championship series,” Derek.
He’ll have his whole family cheering him on.
“He’s prepared for all of this. And just having Bo there and us being present has been our number one goal as a family. We are behind him no matter what. Wherever he goes, we go,” said Linda.
