The son of the Hammond police chief has been arrested again and accused of violating a protective order tied to his original arrest.
Corey Bergeron, 28, was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail last month and is facing one count each of battery on a dating partner with strangulation, a felony, and battery on a dating partner.
Corey Bergeron is the son of Hammond Chief of Police Edwin Bergeron Jr.
Corey Bergeron is accused of violating a protective order linked to the investigation, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The mother of the woman tied to the protective order reached out to WDSU and reported that a video showed her daughter sleeping on Bergeron’s couch, which she provided to the sheriff’s office.
On Monday, deputies were made aware of the evidence that Corey Bergeron was violating the court order to stay away from the woman.
A warrant was obtained for Corey Bergeron’s arrest, and he was taken into custody.
He is in the process of being booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office have made requests for outside agencies to assume control of the investigation into Bergeron.
Corey Bergeron’s original charges:
According to the sheriff’s office, on Thursday, Sept. 24, a woman reported an altercation with Corey Bergeron at his home in the Robert area.
During the investigation, deputies found evidence of at least one prior incident involving the same victim, according to the sheriff.
Edwin Bergeron issued the following statement after his son’s first arrest:
“As Chief of Police, I want to assure the public that all normal policies, procedures, and protocols have and will be followed regarding the investigation involving Officer Corey Bergeron. Because the Hammond Police Department is not the investigating agency in this matter, we will respect the investigative process and allow the appropriate agency to conduct its investigation.
“As a father, I will say that I have personally watched multiple videos and read many text messages involving my son, Corey, and I believe those videos and messages raise serious questions about the truth of the allegations made against my son. Also, it is extremely difficult to watch your child go through a situation such as this.
At the same time, I recognize that this matter must be handled through the proper investigative and legal processes. I believe the facts will ultimately come to light and Corey will be exonerated of all charges.
“Our family will continue to support Corey as we work through this difficult situation and we look forward to a final resolution.”
Victim’s family comes forward:
The investigation into a Hammond police officer is ongoing after a woman accuses him of assault and a second woman files a protective order against him.
“She’s going from a range of emotions; there’s the anger, there’s denial, the sadness, the, the happiness of freedom,” Ashley Pucheu said.
Pucheu is the mother of Ashling Mayo. On Thursday, Mayo accused officer Corey Bergeron of assaulting her. During that investigation, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office learned about a previous assault that happened in April. Corey Bergeron, who is the son of Hammond police Chief Edwin Bergeron, is charged with battery on a dating partner with strangulation, which is a felony. His second charge is battery on a dating partner.
Pucheu is now calling for the investigation to be handled outside of Tangipahoa Parish.
Legal Analyst Dan Friel weighed in on the matter.
“This is purely a state matter. So it’s not one where the federal government is going to get involved by any stretch, but it is one where you potentially do have the opportunity for the case to be moved to a different location,” Friel said.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office issued this statement:
“As with any investigation, if additional assistance is needed, we will not hesitate to ask for it, no matter what level may be needed.”
The TPSO revealed it’s looking into additional potential victims.
WDSU obtained a copy of a protective order filed by a different alleged victim against Corey Bergeron. The order was filed two days before the alleged incident he is currently charged with. While the victim is not ready to be publicly named, the protective order describes multiple instances where she feels Corey Bergeron made her uncomfortable and concerned for her safety.
Now, the TPSO confirms that Corey Bergeron is not charged for any of the allegations in the protective order but said investigators are looking into them.
As of Sept. 29, Hammond police said Corey Bergeron is on administrative leave.
