A Jefferson Parish detective and a suspect are recovering at University Medical Center in New Orleans after being injured in a shooting in unincorporated Gretna Monday evening.
The incident began around 5 p.m. when Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call about suspicious people in the area. When deputies arrived, the suspects ran away.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy John Fitzpatrick said two narcotics detectives, who were working on an unrelated case nearby, spotted one of the suspects at the intersection of Cherrywood Drive and Brookwood Drive. The detectives got out of their cars and shots were fired, injuring both the suspect and one of the detectives. The detective was shot once while the suspect was shot multiple times, according to a news release.
As of Monday night, there is a search underway for the second suspect around the 300 block of Cherrywood Drive.
“It might be the safest place in unincorporated Gretna right now. So, we have a lot of people out there. We have a lot of resources out there right now,” Fitzpatrick said.
Fitzpatrick said they are using every available tool to find the other suspect. Investigators ask neighbors in the area to share any home security footage that may assist in the investigation with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The detective’s family is with him at the hospital as he receives treatment, Fitzpatrick said. Both the detective and the injured suspect are reported to be in stable condition.
