A busy pedestrian area in New Orleans East that has long been ignored now has a new sidewalk.
The 6900 block of Park Brittany Boulevard has been subject to dirt, trash and overgrown vegetation.
In-house Public Works crews completed 420 feet of new sidewalk on Friday afternoon.
Just hours later, dozens of pedestrians were already using the updated infrastructure.
Deputy Director of Public Works Scott Boyle says this is part of their efforts to address critical infrastructure issues across the city in a timely and cost-effective manner.
“We’ve estimated putting in this 420 feet of sidewalk at this location behind me is approximately $40,000 with our cost. Subbing this out or getting a contractor to come and do this, we’ve estimated that to be between $65,000 and $70,000,” said Boyle.
Boyle says that since Public Works began hiring in January, their ranks have grown to more than fifty in-house workers, allowing crews to tackle more than one project at a time.
Meridith Green lives in New Orleans East. He and other young volunteers helped city workers clean up residue left behind from the construction. He says renewed efforts like the sidewalk are signs that the city is moving in the right direction.
“It feels like there’s hope and, after all, the city’s listening. That’s what it feels like. It’s a beautiful feeling,” said Green.
