Two 75-year-old women, one from Vacherie and the other from Garyville, were killed in a head-on crash on LA Highway 44 near Marigold Street in St. John the Baptist Parish Friday shortly before noon.
Louisiana State Police Troop B reported that a 2011 Toyota Corolla was traveling westbound on LA 44 when it crossed the centerline into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a box truck.
Both occupants of the Corolla were properly restrained and were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the box truck, who was also restrained, suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Driver impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash. However, routine toxicology samples were collected as part of the ongoing investigation.
“While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions like these can often mean the difference between life and death,” Louisiana State Police said, reminding motorists to avoid driving impaired, fatigued, or distracted.
